Chieti is known for the collections in it's archaeological museum, it's cathedral and  Roman remains. Variations in the architectural styles (Baroque, Late Baroque, 19th century, art nouveau) present an elegant ensemble.

The cathedral dates from the 9th century. It was largely rebuilt in the 14th century. The campanile is of interest. V. Chiarini goes from the cathedral to corso Marrucino, the main street, which is flanked by churches and palazzi. The church of S. Francesco della Scarpa is Baroque but of medieval origin; the Baroque church of S. Domenico houses the Museo Diocesano d'Arte Sacra containing 15-16th century paintings and frescos. In v. de Lolli is the Pinacoteca Costantino Barbella, displaying works from the 14-20th century. Of particular interest are a preparatory drawing for the "Massacre of the Innocents" by Luca Giordano, a bronze self-portrait by Vincent Gemito, paintings and sculptures. The Tempietti Romani are the remains of three temples dating from the 1st century. Farther on are the remains of the Roman theatre. On the edge of town are the ruins of the Roman baths.

Within the attractive gardens of the Villa Comunale is the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, with interesting prehistoric and early historical exhibits. Note particularly findings relating to pre-Roman funerary cults in Abruzzi (funerary artifacts from the Campovalvano necropolis and from Capestrano and Alfredena) and sculptures, especially the Warrior of Capestrano.The belvedere of the Villa Comunale offers a view south to the Maiella. 1 km. away, in the direction of Pescara,
